    Title:  Secondary Trauma, Critical Incident Stress, Resilience: COVID Times

    Description: Working in the Criminal Justice Field can be rewarding.  It can also create Secondary Trauma reactions.  Exposure to criminal cases of those working these cases may take on trauma or stress reactions that can be impacting.  Understanding the process of trauma reactions are as significant to recognize as are the investigative skills that you develop to work them.  We will discuss this process and how to recognize, prevent, debrief and practice resilience.  We will discuss one more added ingredient: COVID Times.

    Cindy Kuhr has worked in the Criminal Justice Field for approximately 30 years.  She currently serves as the Victim Specialist at BCI working Major Crimes.  In her career she has served as a Child Abuse Investigator, Investigations with the MUI (Major Unusual Incident Division) with the Department of Developmental Disabilities and in a Forensic Unit that assisted in the identification of deceased individuals.  She provides training on multiple topics to those working in the Criminal Justice System.

    She is also Co-Founder of the Ohio Crisis Response Team and has responded to multiple critical incidents such as the Oregon District Shootings in Ohio. She has also responded to such National events as the September 11 Terrorist Attacks.  She serves as a SME on multiple topics to assist in curriculum development. She has developed unique training initiatives addressing Vicarious and Secondary Trauma.

    Description:  Paul shares a perspective on corporate investigations and how crisis management plays into these types of investigations.  Discussion on investigations, response, and current cases in the headlines relating to these topics.

    Paul Flannery is a highly experienced and talented attorney with Flannery/Georgalis, LLC. He focuses his practice on complex criminal and civil litigation matters, in both federal and state court. As both a federal prosecutor and as a defense attorney, Paul has successfully handled a wide array of criminal cases ranging from fraud and public corruption matters to violent crimes, including armed robbery and murder. Paul has also successfully represented individuals and organizations in matters related to professional malpractice, corporate fiduciary duties, real estate, and contract disputes.

    Paul served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of Ohio. As a federal prosecutor, Paul gained significant experience in the investigation and prosecution of federal criminal violations, especially those involving wire, mail, and bank fraud, health care fraud, securities fraud, public corruption, tax offenses, and identity theft. Paul handled some of the District’s most complex cases, including, the trial of a businessman charged with bribing the former director of the Cleveland Veteran’s Administration. Before becoming a federal prosecutor, Paul spent seven years in private practice at a law firm in Baltimore, Maryland, focusing on white collar criminal defense and complex business litigation. Paul graduated from John Carroll University and received his law degree from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.
